How shooting stars work

Shooting Stars is a Distraction and Diversion: roughly every 90 minutes on each world, give or take 15, a star crashes at one of 82 fixed landing sites. It lands at tier 6 to 9 and is mined down one tier at a time, paying out stardust and Mining XP as you go. It only needs a click every 7 minutes, which is why it is one of the most popular idle ways to train Mining.

Each tier lasts 7 minutes while at least one player is mining it, however many join in — so a fresh tier 9 star lasts about 63 minutes, and the time left on any star is simply its tier times seven. The tracker estimates each star's current tier and time left from when it was last called.

You earn 32 Mining XP for each stardust (16 on free-to-play worlds), and the chance of a stardust per swing rises with your Mining level. At 90+ Mining with a dragon pickaxe that comes to roughly 30,000 XP an hour. The first player to find a star gets the discovery bonus: double stardust for their next 300, from any star.

Stardust is spent at Dusuri's Star Shop by the Mining Guild entrance in Falador (members only): a celestial ring for 2,000, a star fragment for 3,000, a bag full of gems for 300 and a soft clay pack for 150.

Members can also find stars themselves with a telescope in a player-owned house study, which shows the region and a landing window — 24 minutes wide with an oak telescope, 9 with teak and 2 with mahogany.

Star tiers and Mining levels

A tier needs ten Mining levels per step. Stars always land at tier 6 or above; lower tiers are what a star wears down to.

Every place a star can crash, by region, with the quickest ways to get there. 21 are in free-to-play areas; a star on a free world can still land in a members area, where a free player cannot reach it.
